Social media platform updates · October 2026

What changed on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Meta this week

The platforms push out changes every week, and most of them don't matter to a business account. A few do. Every Thursday we read through all of it so you don't have to, and tell you what to do about the ones that count.

Three updates that change how you should post

YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts algorithm now favors original videos over reposts

YouTube changed the Shorts algorithm to push original videos and reduce reach for re-uploaded or aggregator clips. Instagram made a similar change in April.

Do this: If you post the same clip everywhere, add something to the YouTube version: a voiceover, a text intro, a different cut. A straight re-upload will underperform.

Facebook

Facebook is testing limits on link posts for business Pages

Some Pages are seeing a cap on how many posts with outbound links they can publish. Meta has long reduced reach on link posts; this is a harder version of that.

Do this: If Facebook drives traffic to your site, move the link to the first comment or your bio, and lead with a native photo, video or text post.

Instagram

Instagram lets you add tagged posts to your own profile grid

You can now pull a post someone tagged you in onto your profile grid, next to your own posts. Instagram also published an updated Reels creation guide.

Do this: Go through recent customer and partner posts that tag you and add the good ones to your grid. Free content and social proof in one step.

Every social media update this week, by platform

TikTok

TikTok Ad Network launches in the US, with Smart+ search ads

TikTok ads can now run across partner apps and sites in the US, and Smart+ can automate search ads inside TikTok.

For you: If you run TikTok ads, check whether your campaigns opted into the network by default and decide if you want them running off-platform.

TikTok testing Buy Direct checkout and an AI shopping assistant

In limited testing: in-app checkout (Buy Direct), an AI shopping assistant, and "Agentic Leads," an AI agent that qualifies leads from your ads.

For you: Nothing yet. If you sell on TikTok Shop, keep an eye on Buy Direct. It would shorten the path from video to purchase.

TikTok builds an in-app hub for Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero"

A dedicated hub where fans unlock behind-the-scenes content together and earn a profile frame by posting with the song.

For you: If the song fits your brand (wedding vendors especially), posting with it this week gets a boost. Business accounts should check the sound is available to them first.

Instagram

Instagram tests a read-only mode for viewing profiles

A mode for browsing profiles without liking, following or messaging, possibly tied to a paid "Instagram Plus" subscription. Still a test.

For you: Nothing yet. If it rolls out, some visitors will look without leaving a trace, so profile visits would matter more than follows.

Instagram adds AI-generated songs to DMs

You can generate a short AI song and send it in a direct message.

For you: A novelty. Not something a business account needs to use.

Facebook

Meta launches "Meta One for Business" subscription packages

Bundled paid packages for business accounts, grouping verification and support features.

For you: Only worth a look if you already pay for Meta Verified. Otherwise, skip.

X

X Lift turns a business website into an ad campaign

An AI tool that reads your website and generates an X ad campaign from it.

For you: If you've been curious about X ads but didn't want to build a campaign, this lowers the effort. Review what it generates before spending.

X

X updates its video composer with better captions

A refreshed in-app video posting tool, including improved caption options.

For you: If you post video on X, add captions. Most people watch with sound off.

Reddit

Reddit lead gen ads add a HubSpot integration

An improved lead generation ad format, an in-market audiences test, and a direct HubSpot integration.

For you: If you use HubSpot and sell to a niche with an active subreddit, Reddit lead ads just got easier to test.

Threads

Threads tests new visual layouts for quote posts

Threads is experimenting with new ways to display a quoted post. Still a test.

For you: Nothing to do yet.
